What Avalon does to a car
Avalon's water is the hardest of anywhere we work by a wide margin — about 21.6 grains per gallon, with total dissolved solids around 850 parts per million, drawn from island groundwater and seawater desalination. That is roughly two and a half times the hardness of mainland Los Angeles supply, and it means a panel left to air-dry after a rinse spots heavily every time. On top of that, the whole developed part of the island sits inside the band where airborne salt is at its most aggressive, and the harbour-front streets are at the waterline itself. Salt holds moisture against paint, trim and brightwork, and there is no summer rain to take it off. Island water rationing is tied to the level of Middle Ranch Reservoir and has been in force for much of the past decade; it is currently off.
Avalon's code prohibits non-stormwater from surface washing discharging to Avalon Bay outright, and the harbour-front streets drain directly into it — Crescent, Casino Way and the Pleasure Pier among them. So work here happens on private property and off the public right-of-way: driveways, garages, private lots and business yards. The island's vehicle mix is its own thing too, mostly autoettes and golf carts rather than full-size cars, and those need different handling from a sedan.
