What Anaheim does to a car
The water is hard everywhere in Anaheim. The 2025 Water Quality Report puts city groundwater at an average 318 ppm — about 19 grains per gallon — the Lenain treated imported supply at 288 ppm and MWD imported at 271 ppm, with detections across the city ranging from 135 to 431 ppm. Rain does nothing to help. The NOAA 1991–2020 normal for the Anaheim station is 13.52 inches a year spread over just 35 days, and June through September together average 0.38 inches; August's normal is one hundredth of an inch against a normal high of 88.8°F. Every major arterial here crosses a freeway carrying six figures of traffic — the 91 at Gypsum Canyon Road in Anaheim Hills counted 272,100 vehicles a day in 2023. East Anaheim and the canyons sit in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone with Santa Ana wind exposure; the 2017 Canyon Fire 2 started near the 91 at Gypsum Canyon, burned 9,217 acres and destroyed 25 homes.
Anaheim Municipal Code 10.18.130 permanently prohibits using water to wash a vehicle except by hand-held bucket or a hose fitted with a self-closing shut-off nozzle. The city's illicit-discharge rule in Chapter 10.09 carves out only "non-commercial vehicle washing at residences," which does not describe a paid service, and it defines the street gutter itself as part of the storm drain system. The code adds that a violation stands "irrespective of the negligence or intent of the violator." We bring our own water and our own power, and we work on your driveway, in your garage or in your parking stall.
