The monitor inside the city at 24302 East 4th Street logged 109 days over the federal eight-hour ozone standard in 2024, a 36.1 microgram annual PM10 average, and 69 of 334 samples over the state 24-hour coarse-particle standard. There is a documented source close by: the Air Resources Board's health risk assessment of the BNSF railyard at 1535 West 4th Street found the 168-acre facility emitting roughly 22 tons of diesel particulate a year, running 24 hours a day, with some homes within 200 feet of the fence line. Caltrans counted 216,000 vehicles a day on the 215 at Orange Show Road in 2023. The city's General Plan also classifies the northern half of San Bernardino as a High Wind Area, where downslope canyon and Santa Ana winds off the mountains are described as reaching 90 to 100 miles an hour.
San Bernardino's code names this work explicitly, which is unusual and worth knowing.
